Solar Branco 1885
We believe the house was built around 1885 after the whaling and citrus industries had slowly declined in the Azores. The name “Solar Branco” means a large white house in Portuguese, so we thought that this would be an appropriate name for the property. We came across the house on our second holiday to the Azores in 2018, the first having been back in 2006 when we travelled to the Azores on honeymoon. As we walked around the property, (Ali) discovered it had a library that could be converted into a gin palace, and (Caroline) loved the original features and authentic design of the house. We both fell in love with the house and the property was purchased on the spot.
The house is conveniently located less than 10 minutes from the beach, and just 15 minutes from Ponta Delgada with easy access to the main highways that run across the island (for a map click here.) The house is very peaceful as it is surrounded by farmland and very few other houses.
The house has not been without challenges, as we have approached the challenge of how to modernise the house for short-term guests, yet at the same time keep a link to the age, culture, and history of the property as a home here in the Azores.
Our gardens are a source of much pride, and we do hope that you will take some time to walk around and soak up the fresh air, peace and quiet as well as the beautiful surroundings. You can read more about the gardens here.
We very much hope that you will enjoy your stay with us (and visit the gin library of course.)
