Built around 1885 after the citrus industry had slowly declined in the Azores. The name “Solar Branco” means a large white country house in Portuguese, adaptly describing the property.

Location: The house is conveniently located just 10 minutes drive from the main town of Ponta Delgada as well as the airport. Local shops and the beach are a short drive or walk away.  For directions to the house click here

The house and grounds have been fully restored, with a close eye on keeping the original details and features of the house while upgrading key amenities to ensure your stay is as perfect as it can be.

The house has a large living room and a separate breakfast / dining room. There is a double garage on the property with room for more cars as needed. There is no air-conditioning in the house, fans are available for warmer days and we have wonderfully comfortable quilts for those winter evenings to ensure you are cosy and warm at night. The kitchen is available for everyone to use (in fact we actively encourage people to use it, no better place to  get to know people.) Each guest is entitled to a complimentary G&T at The Secret Gin Club located in the library.

  • Wifi throughout the house (and on the veranda)
  • 4 double bedrooms (with en-suite facilities) in the main house
  • Easy parking on site
  • In person check-in
  • Airport pick up / drop off service (additional charge applies)
  • Complimentary luggage storage
  • Very comfortable king size beds

The Gin Library: And of course, most importantly, guests of Solar Branco 1885 have access to the Secret Gin Club. We have over 300 gins from around the world to showcase and enjoy. Your stay includes a complimentary G&T on arrival as well as the opportunity to take part in a gin tasting. If you bring a gin that we don’t have (it must be a craft gin, and unopened) then you don’t have to pay for the gin tasting. Please note, this area is strictly for adult guests or by invitation only.

Our gardens are a source of much pride, and we do hope that you will take some time to walk around and soak up the fresh air, peace and quiet as well as the beautiful surroundings. You can read more about the gardens here

Experiences: We are delighted to offer a number of experiences, from gin tasting to painting tiles. We are also able to help you with other activities such as tours around the island or whale watching. Just ask us here or for some ideas please click here.

Mountain bikes: As a guest, you have access to a range of high-end mountain bikes and you are more than welcome to join us for a ride or head out on your own. A number of trails can be found close by or transport can be organised if you wish to go far afield.

Outdoor pods: These are being set up as we speak, and we hope to have these ready for our guests use in mid-2019, we apologise for the delay, but assure you that this will be amazing and worth the wait.

Guests & children: The house is designed to be a welcoming place for you to relax in peace and quiet. That is what the Azores is all about, Ibiza this is not. Come in, tune out, turn off your phone, we got you covered. The gardens are available for you to enjoy with a number of benches to sit on and just watch the world go by. Children are only allowed on the property if you book the whole house. When mixed guests are staying, we do not take bookings for under 16’s. Thank you for your understanding.

Please note, smoking in any part of the house or grounds is strictly forbidden. This includes vaping. Thank you for your understanding.

Outside the property:

Shops: There is a small town, less than a 5-minute drive with a fully stocked supermarket or if you wish it is a 10-minute drive to the main shopping center, Parqa Central.  There is also a small (but well stocked) supermarket as well as a small cafe/bar where the locals hang out just below the house.

Beaches: The closest beach is only a 5-minute drive or 15-minute walk, with a cafe overlooking the ocean this is a great place for a morning coffee or breakfast should you wish. You can also drive, cycle or walk into town from here, follow the ocean road, it will take 1 hour to 1.5 hours if you are walking, cycling around 30 minutes and by car no more than 10 minutes.

Walks & Hikes: We are incredibly fortunate to be located in an area of outstanding beauty with relatively few developments. The area is predominantly farmland. The surrounding hills give you some great walks (and views) to enjoy.

We have worked on the philosophy of keeping the heritage of the property and gardens alive for our guests. We hope you feel as at home here in the Azores as we do.
