When it Rains: The Top 5 Things To Do In The Azores

Just like any holiday, anywhere in the world, it can rain. And while the Azores is generally a sunny place, with an average 21c year round (69f) it can rain. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yourself – see it as a chance to take some time out and appreciate the small but important things in life. And with that in mind, here are our top 5 suggestions of what to do on such a day.

1. Sleep in and get some Zzzzzzzz
The property is surrounded by countryside and farms as well as having some of the most comfortable beds around (we promise!) So take some time out for you. Close your eyes, snuggle up and just listen to the rain tapping on the window.

2. Read a book
When was the last time you turned your phone to silent (not off, we’re not monsters) and just read a book? If the answer is anywhere between “I can’t remember” or “let me check my Facebook memories for that one…” Then it’s time to take some time out for you. The Gin Library is a perfect place to sit back and take some time to recharge. Our property also has a comfortable living room and if you feel like it, you can even sit outside on the veranda, staying dry but listening to the rain.

3. Gin & Tonic tasting
Speaking of the gin library.  At Solar Branco 1885 we have a gin library for guests and this is a great opportunity to take part in one of our gin tasting courses. The library has a display of over 400 gins, including carefully selected examples from here in the Azores and Portugal. Best of all, bring a craft gin we don’t have and you can enjoy the tasting for free! More details here.

4. Sausage making class
We take only local, quality . ingredients and teach you how to make sausages. Everything you need is provided, and we’ll even hang them for you for 24 hours so they taste truly delicious. You can choose between eating them in the Azores or have them vacuum packed to take home with you.

5. Paint a tile
At Solar Branco 1885 you can paint a tile and then attach to our wall of memories. A perfect way to leave your mark in the Azores, honour a loved one with a special memory, or just play around with and draw something fun. Something to come back to one day…

6. (Bonus!) Dog snuggling
As a bonus, we left the best for last.  We have 5 rescue dogs (originally from Hong Kong) who love to snuggle (almost as much as they like treats.)  If it’s raining and the other guests don’t mind then we can bring the dogs over to say hi and relax in the downstairs lounge.
